Time has always been the number one excuse when it comes to eating a hearty bowl of oats and fruit in the morning. If you want to stay healthy and not break your bathroom scale, a bowl of oats is what the doctor orders and the nutritionist demands, but who has the time these days to cook oats, cut up some fruit, and sit down calmly to eat before rushing out the door? So imagine our surprise when we received Quaker’s delicious new product called Overnight Oats. It is basically a cup-to-go of oats with fruit that you top up with your favorite milk or non-dairy option at night and grab in the morning on the way to work. Voila! All excuses out the door! If you needed reminding why this first-of-its-kind product is a must, oat protein is nearly equivalent in quality to soy protein, which World Health Organization research has shown to be equal to meat, milk, and egg protein. And let’s not forget the war on our weight! Oats are an excellent defense mechanism. According to a small study conducted by the University of Missouri involving 20 overweight or obese females aged 18 to 20 who were infrequent breakfast eaters, those that received 35g of protein in the morning were less hungry throughout the day. After sampling a few of the flavors at the office, verdict was a thumbs up with just one question about the sugar content on the label. How was the product developed?

The idea of overnight oats was originally popularized by consumers on social media and quickly became an overnight sensation. In fact, Google Trends reported that in 2016, people were searching for overnight oats recipe inspiration twice as often as they were the year prior. Following this surge, Quaker moved fast to add value by showcasing the many ways overnight oats can be prepared. We first focused on educating consumers on the process and encouraged them to make their own overnight oat creations through a digital campaign that shared a number of recipe ideas, how-to videos, and more. As the trend continued to grow, Quaker found a way to make overnight oats even easier through the launch of Quaker Overnight Oats.

Is there a way for it to have less sugar? It was very sweet and what about people who don’t like such sweet oats?

The sugars come mainly from the fruit pieces, though there is some added for taste. Each nutritional profile is slightly different based on the variety – Blueberry, Banana & Vanilla Bliss and Toasted Coconut & Almond Crunch flavors have the lowest amount of sugar.
