Posted On Apr 26, 2016
Actress Tiffani Thiessen, met a great deal of success in the early 90s with primetime starring roles on television series such as NBC’s Saved by the Bell, Fox’s Beverly Hills 90210, and USA Network’s White Collar. The multi-dimensional ingénue also made an ineffaceable impact on the silver screen with dramatic leading roles in films including, Speedway Junkie, The Ladies Man, Two Guys and a Girl, From Dusk till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money, and Love Stinks.
Securing one’s star-power within the circle of Hollywood is never guaranteed. However, Thiessen proves time and again, that with the embodiment of a keen love for her artistry combined with an industrious work ethic, she definitely encompasses the pedigree to success. If one were asked to describe the TV industry veteran in three words by all means, authentic, ageless, and transformative would appropriately capture the inner essence of this dynamic woman.
Her newest role as the quintessential cuisine connoisseur allows viewers a glimpse into chef Thiessen’s kitchen. She shares her favorite saporous recipes and priceless tips for entertaining guests on, Dinner at Tiffani’s, airing on the Cooking Channel. To further add, the family-orientated wife and mother of two has recently joined forces with Albertson Companies by adding her trademark touch towards the launch of their unprecedented Signature brand.
From the 42-year-old’s delectable black pepper angel hair pasta to her signature affogato mouthwatering dessert, Thiessen shares with us a few of her kitchen secrets, reminisces on Kelly Kapowski [then and now], the validity behind the old saying, “the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” as well as the measures in which her mother’s influence has been a guiding post throughout the years.
New You: Between Saved by the Bell and Beverley Hills 90201, the shows have several die-hard fans that have followed from the very beginning. More than 20 years later, why do you believe both shows continue to deliver for people?
Tiffani Thiessen: Oh gosh, that is seriously a really good question that I ask every day. (laughs) I have no idea, maybe because the 80s and 90s are coming back into fashion? It is crazy that both shows still run, do extremely well, and that people are still very much in tune with the characters.
NY: What is a beauty mainstay that hasn’t changed for you since your Kelly Kapowski days?
TT: Water was and still is the number one key of staying young and healthy. Additionally, I wash my face every night because I never want to go to bed wearing any makeup. However, to answer your question, I would honestly have to say there have been more personal beauty changes than anything else. For instance, a lot of the things that I used to do, I have eliminated from my beauty routine such as not washing my hair every day and using a lot less hairspray.
NY: Can you let us in on your secret to successfully balancing motherhood, marriage, career, social life, and everything else that you have going on a daily basis?
TT: I don’t know if I would necessarily say that I succeed because I am constantly trying to. I have a great husband as well as a supportive family that are extremely helpful. I have been very vocal about when my mother once lived with us in New York in order to help take care of our daughter Harper. As they say, it takes a village and we are proving that every day, especially now more than ever with raising two kids!
NY: Speaking of your mother, what is a piece of advice that you took from your mom once you became a mother??
TT: Oh, wow! Although you always think you are never going to, one thing is for sure, I definitely sound just like her half of the time when I am speaking with my kids. (laughs) I adore my mother and I am extremely close with her. Personally, I feel that I am an extension of her. As I previously stated, she has been tremendous in helping us with our children and because of this I literally trust everything that she does.
One of the major elements in life that she has taught me is patience. She has always forewarned me, that I may feel frustrated one minute but it will not last for long. Ultimately, it will change within a matter of minutes and she was totally right! I have to admit; your frustrations never last long especially with children.
NY: Has motherhood influenced your personal food choices? If so, in what ways?
TT: Absolutely! I have always been a firm believer in leading by example. Now that my daughter is older this really comes into play with her. She is much more of an adventurous eater which is great because she watches everything that her mom and dad eat. Harper is really into cooking and spending time with me in the kitchen to create great dishes.
This is just one of several reasons why it has been a joy to work with Albertsons Companies and Safeway Stores on their Signature line in order to show everyone how to make signature meals while simultaneously creating signature moments.
NY: They say, the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, would you say this was what sealed the deal between you and your husband?
TT: Oh yes, definitely! Anytime he begins to get a little grumpy I know it is because he needs to eat. If there is ever a time to make him happy, all I need to do is to prepare him a well-cooked meal. He is a happy boy, especially if it is any type of meat base or something we can place on the grill.
NY: Well, I am jotting notes and taking your advice to learn how to cook meals for my future husband. (laughs)
TT: Yes, you absolutely should! I assure you it does not take a lot. With the recipes that I have created with the Signature line they are super easy and I promise you anyone can make them.
NY: With your cooking show, Dinner at Tiffani’s, what is the one reaction you most look forward to after someone tries one of your signature dishes?
TT: I relish in the reaction of people loving it. Honestly, I have never sent anyone home unhappy! Most, if not everyone, carries a doggy bag home which is always a good feeling.
NY: If you could host a dinner party with any five people living or dead, who would be there?
TT: Oh gosh, let’s see this is a hard one! I would say Mother Theresa, Princess Diana, President Obama, Jimmy Fallon, and Chris Farley.
When planning a dinner party, you have to always ensure everyone has someone in attendance that they will get along with. I think Mother Theresa and Princess Diana would chat a lot and get along well. I would also love to talk to President Obama about all of the craziness that is currently taking place within our political world. Last but not least, you always need a funny man at the table therefore I believe Chris [Farley] and Jimmy [Fallon] would seal the deal and be the icing on the cake to hosting the ultimate dinner party.
NY: What would be on the menu using two of your favorite recipes?
TT: Not being aware of their dietary restrictions I would include my black pepper angel hair pasta because it is super simple to make and most people eat pasta!
1 lb. Signature Kitchens™ Angel Hair Pasta
2 Tbs unsalted butter, cubed
1/2 cup Pecorino Romano cheese, grated
Pinch of Kosher Salt
Pinch of Fresh Ground Black Pepper
2 Tbs Italian parsley, minced
Cook pasta per package instructions.
Warm a 12-inch sauté pan over medium heat; add butter and allow to melt.
Add in cooked pasta and toss to coat.
Add cheese, black pepper and salt.
Divide between two bowls, garnish with parsley and serve.
Signature Affogato: If you want to wow a few friends invite them over for a delicious dessert. The Affogato is amazing! Besides, who doesn’t love ice cream? The Affogato is made of ice cream and coffee and you can’t go wrong with that.
2 (2 ounce) scoops Signature SELECT™ Moose Tracks Ice Cream
3 oz. prepared Signature SELECT™ Coffee, Kona Blend
Soft whipped cream
Peanut Brittle, crushed
Add 2 scoops to a clear parfait glass.
Pour half an ounce of coffee over ice cream.
Top with soft whipped cream, chocolate shavings and peanut brittle.
NY: How do you put your signature on everyday foods and make them special?
TT: Personally for me, it is truly about connecting with the people that I love. It definitely does not consist of being in the kitchen for long hours at a time to create an extensive four-course meal.
It is really about putting the love of cooking into simple dishes that stem from quality products as well as creating that special moment of spending quality time with each other when everyone is sitting down to break bread.
NY: What exciting things do you have lined up for the remainder of 2016?
TT: I just received the awesome news that Dinner at Tiffani’s has been picked up for a third season. Additionally, we are shooting a couple of specials this year and a possible stint of an east coast version of Dinner at Tiffani’s.
