Fight Middle-Age Flab

We all know that the battle of the bulge becomes harder and harder to fight as we age. This is mostly due to hormonal changes inside the body, namely the decrease of progesterone and the increase of estrogen produced in a woman’s body as she enters her forties. Estrogen locks in fat around the middle section of the body, leading to the dreaded mid-life flab.

However, hormones aren’t entirely to blame. There are common mistakes we all make daily that could be accelerating this process and triggering even more weight gain. By being aware of these pitfalls and working to circumvent them, you can avoid that unflattering midlife muffin top.

Mistake 1: Not drinking enough water. Thirst is often confused with hunger and not drinking enough water leads to hormonal imbalance, which can cause weight gain and fluid retention. Make sure to drink eight 8-oz glasses of cold water every day to boost your metabolism.

Mistake 2: Eating out too often. Sure, dining out is convenient and a fun way to spend time with friends and co-workers but too much restaurant food can make you fat. Meals eaten out contain about 18 percent more calories than meals eaten at home and portion sizes tend to be larger. Make smart decisions when you choose to dine out such as sharing meals with friends who have healthy habits and going out only for breakfast or lunch. That way, you can avoid alcohol consumption and less healthy menu options.

Mistake 3: Drinking too much alcohol. It’s tempting to have a glass of wine or a beer when you get home from work but if you start doing this on a regular basis, you can expect to pack on the pounds. Limit your drinking to one or two nights a week.

Mistake 4: Indulging in unhealthy snacking. You already know that candy, chips, and basically anything found in a vending machine probably isn’t good for you. However, many snacks advertised as “healthy”, such as pretzels and granola bars, are actually filled with empty calories. Choose genuinely healthy snacks such as fruit, nuts, and Greek yogurt. Also, think before you snack and don’t snack just because you are bored.

Mistake 5: Sitting around too much. It’s important to stay active as you age. If you have a desk job, you may spend a lot of your time each day sitting and this can cause you to gain weight since you aren’t burning off the calories you consume. Make sure to get up and move around every couple of hours during the day. Taking a brisk 20 minute walk after work can clear your mind and stop weight gain in its tracks.

Middle-age weight gain is common but it’s not inevitable. Taking a few steps can ensure that you stay fit well into your golden years.
