The longer you can hold a firm grip, the more willpower you’ll have—to stick to an exercise regimen, a diet, an important project, you name it. That’s the conclusion of McMaster University researchers, who believe that holding a firm grip requires high levels of self-control during which a person must “resist the temptation to quit.” The good news: Self-control can be trained and improved over time.
