NORTH SAILS AND SAKS FIFTH AVENUE SAIL TOGETHER
Posted On Mar 15, 2017
When North Sails apparel decided to partner with Saks Fifth Avenue, it was a match made in sailing heaven. After all, any design made in Italy and showcased in a venerable luxury department store will always create a buzz. But what makes this partnership stand apart, is their combined heritage for impeccable style, design, and class. Travel anywhere in the world where there is a harbor dotted with luxurious yachts, and you will see the North Sails logo. With that said, we were delighted to spend a VIP day out at sea aboard an 80 foot Hatteras boat in Miami, courtesy of North Sails, to view the 52 Super Series. Two-time Olympic sailor, Dave Hughes was on board to answer a myriad of questions from the Saks Fifth Avenue Brickell and Bal Harbour clients, and yes, we learned a thing or two about yacht racing. If you are a captain, you want to make sure you are not the cause of repeated false starts before the race no matter how hard it is to keep your boat near the start – it is never viewed favorably.
We also had a chance to view the North Sails Collection onboard the boat. This was in concert with their announcement of the launch of a national traveling pop-up shop of their men’s Spring/Summer 17 Collection. Here, the Global Head of Design at North Sails, Ben Meers, gives us a glimpse behind the creation of this very impressive collection.
What was your inspiration for the men’s Spring/Summer 17 collection?
The inspiration was really to create a full collection with a modern sensibility that maximizes both style and performance. It’s really in line with our brand DNA, which is innovation, bold design and the mastery of sailmaking. Everything is classic, yet versatile with a performance element and features a breathable and articulated fit.
Why do men choose North Sails windbreakers (sailing jackets) over any other brand?
Men choose our windbreakers because we really bring our history of innovation into apparel. It’s all about form and function that looks great through the filter of great design, made from proprietary sailing materials that are durable, such as our Suplex Nylon.
What is it about the North Sails /Saks Fifth Avenue partnership that makes you the most excited?
North Sails Collection and Saks Fifth Avenue have a great alignment with their customer base. We are hopeful the partnership will continue forward, we have every intention for it to.
With many women-only teams racing major yacht races today, what do you take into consideration when designing a women’s collection.
We consider the same two things when designing for both men and women: form and function that looks great. We’ve been making apparel in Italy for 25 years, and we rely on that heritage of tailored sportswear to create sleek, functional, and stylish clothing for women that will maximize performance.
The first pop-up shop debuts in Miami at Saks Fifth Avenue in Brickell City Center this week. The North Sails Collection will also be available for purchase in the North Palm Beach, Sarasota, Palm Beach, and Naples retail locations, as well as at Saks Fifth Avenue online.
