Sweet Spots

These three summer getaways are packed with adventure, relaxation, and city excitement.

For a life-changing getaway that’s packed with tons of adventure, Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, Missouri, is one of America’s premier wilderness resorts. Surrounded by 3,000 acres of untouched Ozark Mountain wilderness, the resort overlooks the 43,000-acre Table Rock Lake and features elegant lodges, cottages, and cabins. Amenities and activities include five great swimming pools, waterskiing, bass fishing, and horseback riding. The four on-site eateries often showcase trout fished from the fresh spring water at Rockbridge Trout and Game Ranch.

Meanwhile, the awesome, off-property Dogwood Canyon Nature Park is 10,000 acres of untouched wonderland, offering activities such as 3-D archery, cattle drives, hiking, and biking. Recently, Big Cedar Lodge introduced “Top of the Rock,” a nature-based heritage preserve and majestic cliff-top extension with cave and canyon tours, a golf course, restaurants, museums, and more. If you love to try new experiences, you won’t want to leave.

A brand-new, 18,000 square-foot spa has a variety of treatments, an indoor grotto pool, and an ice room for cold therapy. Expect unique offerings such as sunburn relief treatments, anti-aging manicures, and a 50-minute Ozarks rain experience. In the latter, guests wear a bathing suit and enjoy the therapeutic water from eight showerheads. Afterwards, a therapist exfoliates your skin with a seasonal scrub and rehydrates you with a delightful “soufflé.” Summer rates average at $340 per night. Visit big-cedar.com.

Ocean Paradise

Terranea, a Destination Hotel, encourages guests to explore and immerse themselves in activities and offerings they’re passionate about,” says resort president Terri A. Haack. Located in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, this 102-acre peninsula offers sweeping views of the Pacific and feels more like the Mediterranean than SoCal.

Suites, bungalows, casitas, and villas have balconies, bathtubs, flat screens, and WiFi. A $25 nightly resort fee includes complimentary Champagne at check-in, coffee and tea, transportation, fitness center access, pool and beach services, and even complimentary yoga and Pilates classes.

There are also activities for everyone in your brood. Head to Pointe Discovery for ocean kayaking, tide pooling, whale watching, tennis, painting by the sea, and hiking. Try all three pools: the resort pool with its waterslide, the spa pool, and “Cielo Point,” for adults. The Links at Terranea is a 9-hole, par-3 oceanfront golf course with Catalina Island views.

Unwind at the Spa at Terranea—one of Conde Nast Traveler’s “Top 100 Resort Spas in the U.S.” in 2013 and 2014. It spans more than 50,000 square feet and has 25 treatment rooms, a fitness center, three VIP suites, saunas, steam rooms, whirlpools, and indoor and outdoor lounges. Its 30-plus treatments range from hot stone massage to volcanic clay wraps.

There are eight restaurants on property, including ocean-adjacent fine-dining spot Mar’sel, the  Catalina Kitchen (with its irresistible seafood buffet), and the Asian fusion spot Bashi. No need to stress, ache, or go hungry here. Prices start at $470 for a summertime stay. Visit terranea.com.

City Living

If you need a big city getaway, head to the Big Apple. WestHouse Hotel New York is in the heart of Midtown—by Times Square, Fifth Avenue, and Central Park—and is a new hospitality concept that blends the refinement of a luxury hotel with the residential comforts of a townhouse. Rooms are big compared to typical New York City hotels (255 to 750 square-foot rooms, on up to a 1,500 square-foot Presidential Suite). The Sleep Studio bedding system allows your mattress to adjust to different zones of the body for deep sleep.

For a $35  daily “resident fee,” you can take advantage of breakfast, tea, hors d’oeuvres, canapés, and drinks. Dining happens on the 23rd floor, with its grand city views.

If you don’t feel like braving the crowds for Madison Avenue shopping (and if you stay three-plus nights), suites even come with a $500 Net-A-Porter gift card and direct line to a personal shopper. Prices start at $499 a night. Visit westhousehotelnewyork.com.
