Typically, when planning a getaway we look at prices, local attractions, and hotel amenities. However, more travelers are now concerned with how the place they choose to rest their heads could impact the community they’re visiting.

With that, hotels around the world are recognizing the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable tourism and are developing award-winning environmental and economic preservation programs to support the surrounding ecosystems.

Earlier we brought you one-of-a-kind AirBnBs on our travel wish lists – well, our inventory just got longer with these gorgeous, guilt-free bookings lined up below.

1 Hotel

1 Hotels has two establishments in New York and the nature-inspired hotel by Starwood Capital recently launched another enterprise in South Beach, Miami, Florida. The buildings are made of natural, regional, re-purposed, and reclaimed materials, and the exteriors are covered with structured lush flora. The ecotourism of 1 Hotels extend beyond the outer walls as rooms contain organic cotton sheets on hemp-blend-filled beds and in-room glass terrariums. 1 Hotels only use electric Tesla cars to transport guests and work through their energy conservation program to minimize food waste.

Hi Hotel Eco Spa & Beach

A boutique hotel located in Nice, France, Hi Hotel received Green Globe certification for using recycled paper, organic paint, eco-friendly cleaning products, and organic food. The urban hotel offers bicycles and vegetal shampoo and shower gel for guests, while the staff’s uniform shirts are made out of organic cotton.

Ritz Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte, North Carolina applies a great deal of unique and innovative green initiatives, which landed this particular location to be the first Ritz hotel to earn the LEED gold certification. There are two beehives located on the hotel’s rooftop, sweetening guests’ experiences through naturally-made desserts and spa treatments. The rooftop is also home to the chef’s garden and 18,000 plants to slow rain runoff and insulate the building. Free bike rentals, free shuttle services in hybrid vehicles, and a chemical-free pool are available to guests.

Lefay Resort & Spa

The various structures of this five-star resort located in Gargnano, Italy are integrated into the village’s hill slopes to reduce energy and heat dispersion. While rainwater collection and waste are sustainably managed, Lefay Resort stands by the philosophy of eco-sustainability.

Hix Island House

Yearning for a tropical escape to a Caribbean island? Hix Island House in Puerto Rico and its Zen-like environment is perfect for a romantic getaway. The innovative eco-lodge runs on batteries charged by solar power and recycles rainwater. The hurricane, earthquake, and fire proof hotel, which houses 19 loft apartments, was also designed to catch cooling winds and return grey water to the environment.
