Miley Cyrus took to the red carpet over the weekend to attend the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s 46th Anniversary Gala Vanguard Awards where she happily accepted the Vanguard Award for her nonprofit organization, the Happy Hippie Foundation.  The vivacious popstar launched the Happy Hippie Foundation earlier this year which is devoted to helping homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations.

“I want all of you to know that I feel beyond grateful to be in a room full of so many people who care so much about others because unfortunately that is way too rare in the world that we live in today,” Cyrus said. “I’m thinking of tonight not as celebrating what we’ve already done but what we’re doing and what we’re going to do in the future.”

My favorite part of her speech, alongside her sincerity, was quoting Audrey Hepburn. Cyrus ended her speech referencing the famous beauty and Goodwill Ambassador, “As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself, the other for helping others.” It’s a treat to see Cyrus on stage with such a full heart.

But don’t think because it’s a charity event that Miley jumped off the crazy train. She went above and beyond to auction off a piano by licking it. Yes, she licked the piano for charity but this is the Miley we’ve come to know and love. The winning bidder, Orange Is the New Black star Ruby Rose, took home the white piano for $50,000 which was all donated to the center.

We are digging the donations but charity work is not just for the stars. Without charities and non-profits, America simply won’t be able to operate. It is estimated during 2014, that total giving was more than $358 billion, up 7.1% from 2013. This is astounding. Giving to others is essential to yourself. Also, connecting you to your community, increases your sense of purpose and contributes to your overall well-being, mind, body and soul.
