Are the Color of your Sheets Attracting Bed Bugs?

There may be a solution to everyone’s worst nightmare when it comes to those pesky blood-sucking critters that hide between the crevices of your mattress. According to a recent study, the color of your bed sheets can cause a fatal attraction between you and bed bugs. Ugh!

The Journal of Medical Entomology completed an in-depth investigative report where several small pieces of various colored cardstock were placed inside Petri dishes. The bed bugs were then deposited inside each dish and had a total of 10 minutes to decide which one to hide and take cover under. The top two preferences these little oval-shaped, six-legged, golden-colored creatures took a liking to were red and black. Gasp!

The percentages of each color were as follows with 29 percent for red and at a close second was black with 23 percent. According to Corraine McNeill, assistant professor of biology at Union College, “after doing the study, the main reason we think they preferred red is because bed bugs themselves appear red, so they go to these harborage because they want to be with other bed bugs.”

On the other hand, bed bugs seemed to strongly dislike bright colors such as yellow or green. Perhaps because it is reminiscent of brightly lit areas that insects of all kinds generally try to avoid at all times.

So there you have it, ladies and gents! As a precautionary tale, when it comes to your sheets, think twice before purchasing red and/or black. Remember, they are the ultimate color culprits and serve as an open invitation for these sneaky pests. Unless of course, you don’t mind snuggling and cuddling with them between the sheets (wink, wink).
