New You Medical Tip: Add omega-3s to your diet to fight the effects of refined sugars and fats.
Omega-3 fatty acid supplements are well established as a way to boost cardiovascular health. A review of 180 research papers suggests that the benefit of omega-3s extends beyond heart health, potentially counteracting the effects of a high-fat or junk-food-heavy diet. The omega-3 fatty acids may not have a direct impact on weight loss, but they appear to play an important role in slowing the effects of refined sugars and saturated fats in specific areas of the brain (which inhibit the brain’s control on food intake). In other words: Omega-3 fatty acids mimic the effects of a restricted-calorie diet. It’s food for thought.
