Slim Down Before That Breast Procedure

If you are going to have a cosmetic breast procedure you should slim down before hand, a recent report shows. A new study from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine indicates that obese patients are 12 times more likely to suffer complications from breast procedures than are normal-weight patients. The study looked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance claims from 8,000 patients between 2002 and 2006, and found that within 30 days of surgery 18.3 percent of obese patients (2,403) had at least one complication, compared to just 2.2 percent of normal-weight patients (5,597). Complications included inflammation, infection and pain. Procedures included breast reductions, reconstructions, augmentations and lifts. Approximately one-third of adult Americans are now considered obese.
