Personality Maxxing Is the Spring Style Trend Worth Trying

Spring palettes are staying quiet this year. Soft neutrals, dusty pastels, more beige than anyone really asked for. That’s a fine starting point, but a lot of people refuse to stop there. The result? A season where the outfits look calm while everything on top of them (the jewelry, the shoes, the makeup) is doing something much louder and much more specific to the person wearing it. Stylists have started calling it personality maxxing, a workaround where the clothes stay simple, and the accessories and beauty choices do the talking, making sure the whole look still reads as unmistakably yours. Here’s how to do it.

Choose Jewelry With a Backstory

Jewelry is the fastest way in. A watch that belonged to your grandfather, a ring you bought yourself after a hard year, a necklace that only makes sense if you know the story behind it. Pieces like these do more for an outfit than five accessories bought because they were everywhere on your feed last month.

The pieces that feel most personal often become the ones you wear the longest.  Auvere creates bold, sculptural jewelry in high-karat gold and precious materials, pairing lasting value with designs distinctive enough to make a look feel entirely your own. The brand’s Celestial Star Necklace draws on the protective symbolism of a dream catcher, reimagined as a geometric medallion with twelve points radiating outward. Against a plain white shirt, it basically does the job an entire patterned outfit would otherwise do.

“I’ve always believed jewelry should be personal,” says Gina Love, Auvere co-founder and designer. “It’s one of the easiest ways to express who you are without changing your entire look. The pieces you’re drawn to become part of your story, and over time, they take on meaning that goes far beyond what you’re wearing.”

Meaning can also come from making a piece unmistakably your own. Roxanne Assoulin, who cut her teeth at Oscar de la Renta and Marc Jacobs before launching her own line, is best known for stackable enamel bracelets in candy-bright colors, and her Just Say It Custom Bracelet spells out whatever you want in up to eight characters: a name, a set of initials, a private joke, a word you’re trying to live by.

Subtlety isn’t really the point there, and that’s fine. A monogram, a family signet ring, a charm from somewhere that mattered, none of it needs to be loud to work. It just needs to be specific to you.

Add a Pop of Animal Print

Animal print is one of the easiest ways this season to bring personality into a neutral wardrobe. It feels confident and a little unexpected, but because it functions almost like a neutral itself, it’s surprisingly easy to wear. And with everything from leopard and zebra to snake and croc in the mix, there’s an animal print for just about every personality.

Shoes are where it is showing up most right now. Elizée’s Adriana Sandal makes the case for leopard, pairing the statement-making print with patent leather trim and curved ankle straps that frame the foot. Handcrafted in Italy with built-in comfort and stability, they’re an easy way to give a neutral look more personality.

“Animal print works almost like a neutral because it pulls from the same colors we already wear—black, brown, tan, cream.,” says Erika Carrero, founder of Elizée. “That makes it easy to pair with simple pieces, but it can also work with something more extravagant if you treat the print like you would a solid and let it add another layer of personality.”

If you prefer a flat, Zara’s printed mesh ballet flats offer a more casual take. Wear them with straight-leg jeans and a white tee, or use them to break up an otherwise monochromatic look.

And if one animal print isn’t enough, try pairing leopard print accessories with a croc-embossed leather tote. Personality maxxing isn’t really about playing it safe.

Make a Statement With Your Makeup

Let your beauty look match the effort, and the whole thing comes together. Keep skin soft, natural, barely-there. Add a flush to the cheeks. Now pick the one thing you want people to notice. If it’s your eyes, a quick little flick at the outer corner does a lot, and Stila’s Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner makes it easy even if you’re not great with liner. If it’s your lips, skip the nude you always grab and try something bolder. And NARS’ Dragon Girl is the red of all reds.

Remember one loud choice is enough. Personality maxxing comes down to being specific with the little you add, so even a completely neutral outfit still says something about the person in it.
