Robyn Newmark On Turning Her Passion Into Purpose, Becoming The Hollywood Beauty Guru And How To Achieve Glowing Skin

Robyn Newmark has become an industry leader in the skincare and beauty industry. With so many beauty and skincare hacks, trends, and tips sweeping the Internet, one can become inundated with what works and what to avoid. However, as a trusted source among her high-profile clientele, the beauty educator and esthetician has transformed her passion into a profit and purpose of helping men and women achieve luminous skin.

Currently, the beauty industry generates more than $100 billion worldwide, with US consumers spending an estimated $24.5 billion, according to a recent industry insights and trends report. But what sets Robyn Newmark apart is her custom approach catering to individual skincare needs and concerns. NEW YOU chatted with “The Hollywood Beauty Guru” about her recent skincare launch, business advice for aspiring estheticians, exfoliation tips to keep your skin healthy, hydrated, and glowing throughout all four seasons, and much more.

NEW YOU: What inspired you to transition from your creative approach to makeup artistry to being an esthetician?

Robyn Newmark: I started my career as a makeup artist, and between 2008-2010 California required anyone working in a salon, including makeup artists, to become an esthetician. Many makeup artists in Beverly Hills working in a salon didn’t have an esthetician’s license, so many of us had to get a skincare license to continue working on Rodeo Drive. It became a legal matter in many salons. I was pushed to get my aesthetician’s license very reluctantly, and it ended up being the best thing that ever happened to me. Now I’m completely limitless in how I can transform people and the treatments I can perform on them.

NY: Can you tell us more about your professional approach to skincare and how you think it sets you apart in the industry?

RN: That’s a good question! Sometimes, not everyone has the same concern that other people would have for themselves. My custom approach to each client sets me apart because everyone has a different goal. My job isn’t to tell you what you need or make you feel insecure about any particular part of yourself. I always look at the health and vitality of the skin. When you’re helping people reach their goals, they will feel better about themselves.

NY: Do you have any tips for aspiring estheticians who want to own their business someday?

RN: My advice for anyone desiring to be an esthetician is to be patient and follow your passion. Being a beauty professional is the practice of such a broad and wide genre, and you have to narrow it down to your passion. It doesn’t matter if you’re only doing eyebrows or waxing or if you’re a skincare professional or makeup artist. If you focus on that passion, you will be successful at it.

Another tip is to ignore what somebody’s doing next door. Some professionals worry about what the salons and spas are doing around them, and I can only say that you can’t worry about that. If other people are doing the same treatments around you, that’s a good thing. Beverly Hills is the mecca of plastic surgery, and the doctors in Beverly Hills don’t worry about the plastic surgeon beside them. Many professionals worry about competition, but they should find their own identity, stand in the mindset that there’s plenty of room for everyone, and know they have everything they need to succeed.

NY: You’re working with the skin every day. What are the most common concerns?

RN: The most common concerns are aging and brown spots. None of us are getting any younger; the sun is an irrefutable force of damage, and we can’t escape it. We need the sun. It’s a beautiful part of our lives! It’s about creating that balance of preserving our skin and approaching it as a whole. Most people don’t realize our skin is the largest respiratory organ, so we must protect it. It’s a big part of our health, and it’s very telling. It’s a great indicator of your internal health because the skin and the eyes can tell you a lot.

NY: Do you have any general recommendations that people can do for healthy skin or to get their healthy skin journey started?

RN: Yes, of course! It’s based on three things: the building blocks of healthy skin are SPF, vitamin C, and vitamin A, which is our retinol. We need SPF to protect the skin because the sun is the most damaging. Vitamin C will build our immunity and give our skin the immunity it needs to fight the free radicals of daily and internal breakdown. Lastly, retinol (vitamin A) is our renewal process, where cells are shedding and exfoliating on a cellular level.

NY: Let’s chat about exfoliation. How many times a week should the average person exfoliate their face?

RN: That truly depends on a person’s skin type, but for the most part, twice a week. If you have sensitive skin, maybe once a week would be enough for you. There’s always the exception, but on average, doing a good scrub would be beneficial twice a week.

NY: What are the best steps immediately following exfoliation?

RN: Good question! You always want to tone. Usually, we wash our face with warm water to open our pores and clean them out. However, we always want to close the pores back up and then apply our serums and moisturizer. In the evening, I love to put on face oil. I always say you’re only doing your evening routine correctly if you look like a glazed donut by the end (laughs). You want to renew it during the evening because that’s when the body’s natural circadian rhythm will want to repair everything from our organs to our skin. Also, there’s no sun exposure in the evening, and vitamin A can create light sensitivity, which is why we don’t use it during the day.

NY: Regarding quality skincare products, can we dive into your new skincare line?

RN: I’m really excited about it! My new skincare line is unique. You’re getting the benefits of Ayurvedic ingredients as well as medical breakthroughs. We’ve developed an entirely new formulation with very high-quality ingredients. The principles are adopted from Ayurvedic principles and Ayurvedic ingredients regarding the holistic blends for skin health and wellness. It combines the scientific breakthroughs of growth factors, peptides, and niacinamide, along with various ingredients that will be more medical-grade.
